Bring Spring In and Give Your Home a Facelift

Spring is the perfect time to do some cleaning around the house, but it can be difficult to get started. After a long, cold winter, you probably do not want to spend any more time indoors than you have to.

If you plan well, however, spring cleaning does not have to be just another chore. The following tips can help you get your spring cleaning done in record time. Once the job is done, you can enjoy more time in the great outdoors.

Before you get to work, turn up the tunes.  It’s rumored Spotify has their own spring cleaning channel or pick your favorite Pandora station or audiobook.  Now that you are listening to your favorite music or novel you are ready to tackle your spring cleaning:

Give yourself some monetary inspiration – Start by going through your home in search of things you no longer need. If it is in good shape, you can list it on eBay or Craigslist and make some extra cash. Or, consider a yard sale and make some extra money.  Not concerned about making an extra dollar, consider a donation to your favorite charity.

Let the kids help – You do not have to go it alone; enlist the help of your kids to make spring cleaning easier and less stressful. Come up with a list of spring cleaning chores, from weeding the garden to cleaning out the closets, and assign a dollar value to each one.  Don’t worry if you don’t have kids or kids not living at home.  Consider hiring help to clean, wash windows and help with the yard clean up.

Go shopping in the freezer – Spring cleaning the freezer is a great way to save money and avoid waste. Start by taking everything out of your refrigerator and freezer, grouping foods as you go. Take an inventory of what you find, throwing out expired items as you go. Then use the remaining items to plan your meals for the next few weeks. You will not have to spend your time or money at the grocery store until your freezer is cleaned out.

Take the hassle out of kitchen cleaning – Make cleaning your sink easier by filling it with warm water and adding a cup of baking soda. The baking soda will clean away the grease and grime while you finish the rest of your spring cleaning.

Let the sunshine in – Clean your windows without harsh chemicals with just vinegar and water. Fill a bucket with warm water and add two cups of vinegar, then clean the windows until they sparkle. Dry each window with a squeegee for a streak-free finish.

Reclaim your garage – If your car spent the winter outdoors, take the time to reclaim that wasted space. Go through everything in the garage and sort what you find into the “keep” and “not keep” piles. You can make some extra cash by selling your castoffs at the local flea market or perhaps donating them to your favorite charity.

Get ready for summer heat – Spring is the perfect time to make sure your air conditioner is in tip-top shape. Changing the filters, blowing out the dust and cleaning the unit now can help you keep your cool when the dog days of summer arrive.

When the cleaning is done and everything is checked off the list.  Don’t forget to kick up your feet and let the spring and sunshine in.
